Coastal Geohazard Evaluation and Geologic Mapping

As part of a multi-year program, DGGS is establishing a baseline record of dominant coastal processes in and around selected communities. Measured coastal profiles, nearshore bathymetry and coastline characterization will be combined with historic data sets to generate a coastal geohazard map series. These maps, tailored in design for the Alaskan coastline, will aid in the identification of natural hazards that must be considered in the: (1) selection or justification of sites for future development, (2) reduction of losses due to natural hazards, (3) optimization of local resources and (4) protection of human life, property, and the coastal environment.
