Ecology and biogeochemistry of coastal lagoons in Arctic NWR

The complex ecological communities within coastal lagoons of the Arctic NWR appear unique and are relatively poorly understood. These communities support significant populations of fish and wildlife, including USFWS trust species and species important for subsistence harvest. These communities are also believed to be extremely vulnerable to effects of climate change and some anthropogenic activities. Enhanced understanding of the composition and functioning of this ecosystem is essential for documenting future changes and for mitigating potential impacts.
