ASRC Mine Site Dewatering Project, Rolligon Disturbance (2013-2023)

In August 2013, ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. (CPAI) conducted tundra travel using rolligons as part of an effort to dewater the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) Mine Site. This travel, which was approved under permits issued by the North Slope Borough (NSB) and the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (ADNR), resulted in the disturbance of soil and vegetation at multiple locations. A consolidated rehabilitation plan (CRP) was developed to promote the recovery of affected tundra. In 2014, rehabilitation treatments (backfilling and transplanting tundra sod) were applied in nine plots at seven locations identified as requiring remedial action (referred to as Type 1 sites), including the banks of No Name Creek. No treatment was applied to the remainder of the approximately 14.5-mile-long travel route, where the effects of the tundra travel were less evident, and recovery is occurring naturally without treatment.

These results should lead to a better understanding of vegetation response after treatment with summer or winter sod, as well as the response of vegetation that occurred naturally at sites where the disturbance was less severe and no active treatments were applied (i.e., unassisted natural recovery). Also, these results showed that vegetation in winter-harvested sod can survive for at least 10 years while the sod is stored on a gravel pad, and that it can be easily retrieved when needed for other rehabilitation projects. After 10 years, vegetation response in winter and summer sod were comparable. The combined results from the winter sod test plots showed that winter sod is a viable alternative to summer sod. Demonstrating the feasibility of using winter sod at remote sites is important because aviation support is not required. In contrast, transporting summer sod to remote sites requires aviation support.
