Avian Studies in the Willow Project Area (2017-2023)

In 2017, ABR began conducting Spectacled Eider prenesting surveys and Yellow-billed Loon nest and brood surveys in the Willow Project area of the NE NPR-A in support of ConocoPhillips, Alaska, Inc. The surveys were designed to collect data on the distribution, abundance and habitat use of 2 focal taxa in support of permit application: Spectacled Eider ( Somateria fisheri) and Yellow-billed Loon (Gavia adamsii). These species were selected because of: 1) treatened or sensitive status: 2) restricted breeding range; and 3) best management practices adopted by BLM for NPR-A. Nesting and brood-rearing Pacific Loons (Gavia pacifica) andRed-throated Loons (Gavia stellata) and gulls were recorded incidentally during loon surveys.
