Eider Nest Searches in the Alpine Oilfield Area, Alaska 2020

The Alpine Satellite Development Project (Alpine Oilfield) is within the current or historic ranges of 2 species of eiders that are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Oil field operations requires documentation of the presence or absence of eider nests prior to initiating off-pad activities during the nesting season. Since 2009, ABR has conducted nest searches and habitat evaluations at 27 spill-response sites and 4 bridge sites. Currently, 14 ACS sites and 4 road/pipeline bridge crossings still require nest searches if maintenance activities are planned during the eider breeding season. The primary objective of nest searching in 2020 was to document the presence or absence of nesting Spectacled and Steller’s eiders prior to off-pad activities.
