Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Land Cover Mapping, North Slope of Alaska (2019)

This land cover map of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) was produced through analysis of satellite imagery that was informed by field data and other relevant data products. The map provides land cover and vegetation information useful for making resource management decisions, including the identification of wildlife habitat types and their distribution and extent. The classification is based on the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC 2019) and with other land cover maps produced recently for Alaska’s North Slope and Brooks Range regions. Landsat 7 and 8 surface reflectance imagery for 10 July–7 September, 2013–2018 were used in this analysis.

The primary objectives of this project were to:

1) Produce a digital land cover map, informed by new aerial- and ground-based field data, and other relevant GIS and tabular data. Conduct a map accuracy assessment consistent with methods and standards agreed upon with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

2) Prepare digital map products at the 1:63,360 scale, a report that documents methods and results (this report), land cover class descriptions, summaries of the areal extent of land cover classes, the results of the accuracy assessment, a database of field observations, and compile other pertinent information relating to the production and use of the final map
