Special Areas Atlas: State of Alaska Refuges, Critical Habitat Areas, and Sanctuaries

The Alaska State Legislature has recognized certain areas as being essential to the protection and preservation of fish and wildlife habitat. These areas are designated as refuges, critical habitat areas, or sanctuaries. Management of the habitat resources of these special areas is the responsibility of the Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is the co-manager of state-owned lands within the Special Areas.

This atlas identifies the legislatively designated boundaries and purposes of state refuges, critical habitat areas, and sanctuaries in Alaska and provides information to assist you in applying for a Special Area permit to use these lands. Legislation pertaining to these lands may be found in Alaska Statutes Title 16, Chapter 20; regulations concerning specific areas and permitting procedures are found in Part 5, Chapter 95 of the Alaska Administrative Code.
