Oil in Ice: Transport, Fate, and Potential Exposure

University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) - Oil spilled in the arctic marine environment can be rapidly frozen into the ice sheet. The oil will in this way be to some extent preserved, in the sense that evaporation, dissolution, and degradation are expected to be greatly reduced. This implies that the oil will retain much of its potential acute toxicity upon release from the ice, either via transport in brine channels and/or eventual...

Spatial and Temporal Mapping of Nearshore Juvenile Fish and Settling Crab in the North Aleutian Basin (AK-08-08)

US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) - Information on seasonal distribution, abundance, and habitat use are necessary to assess oil-spill risks to sensitive lifestages of fish and crab for North Aleutian Basin NEPA analyses. The information from this study will be used for pre- and post-sale NEPA/EIS analysis and documentation, and by MMS analysts for mitigation of potential effects of OCS exploration and development in the NAB.
