Arctic LTER Lakes

Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (Arctic LTER) - Data for physical and chemical characteristics are collected for several lakes each summer. Initial limnological work at the Arctic LTER began at Toolik Lake in 1975. Through the years the research has expanded to include over two dozen additional lakes and ponds in an effort to better understand the controls on arctic lake ecosystem structure and function.

Understanding the Ecology of Pacific Walrus Populations to Support Department of Interior Regulatory Agencies and Provide Information to Native Subsistence Communities

US Geological Survey (USGS) - Using radio tagging to investigate changes in Pacific walrus movements, breeding and hunting in response to climate change and human influence on habitat. Climate change and its impact on Pacific walruses are of great concern. Female walruses use sea ice to rest and nurse their young in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. They rely on the close proximity of sea ice to the continental shelf where...

Impacts of Seismic Trails, Camp Trails and Ice Roads on Tundra Vegetation in the Northeast NPR-A

US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - The results demonstrate how vegetation type and trail type influence the level of impacts, and how recovery progresses over time. The study will compare impacts to the tundra and tundra vegetation recovery to sites elsewhere on the North Slope. Soils (active layer) and vegetation measurements. Measured active layer at 61 plots, 1999-2005 (every 3 years), and 46 of those were monitored...

Epidemic of Beak Deformities among Wild Bird Populations

US Geological Survey (USGS) - Documenting species affected by beak deformities, tracking the prevalence of beak deformities and their effect on survival and reproduction, and testing for various factors that could be contributing to beak deformities such as contaminants, disease, parasites and nutritional imbalances. Since January 1998, about 2000 birds of 30 different species have been reported in Alaska with grossly...
