Synthesis and Scaling of Hydrologic and Biogeochemical Data on the North Slope and Coastal Zone of Alaska

National Center for Atmospheric Research - Earth Observing Laboratory (NCAR EOL) - Understanding land-ocean-atmosphere coupling is essential for developing an integrated view of the arctic system, and is a key component of the Study of the Northern Alaska Coastal System (SNACS) program. As an important contribution to SNACS, this data set contributes to an investigation of the linkage between hydrologic variables and constituent (nutrients and organic matter) fluxes. The...

Preliminary Investigation of Paleoenvironment, Processes, and Carbon Stocks of Drained Thaw-Lake Basins, Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska

National Center for Atmospheric Research - Earth Observing Laboratory (NCAR EOL) - This data set contains measurements taken from 78 drained thaw-lake basins on the Arctic Coastal Plain between Barrow and Atqasuk, Alaska. Investigators collected and analyzed sediment cores to determine soil and vegation composition, and used Landsat 7+ imagery and degree of basin polygonization to determine the relative age of the basins. Analysis of the cores included pollen, radiocarbon,...

Coring Data from Drained Thaw-Lake Basins of the Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska

National Center for Atmospheric Research - Earth Observing Laboratory (NCAR EOL) - This data set includes measurements and observations taken from drained thaw-lake basin (DTLB) cores retrieved from Barrow and Atqasuk, Alaska in April and August of 2001 through 2003. Investigators selected young, medium, old, and ancient DTLBs to collect data from by surveying their vegetation. DTLBs become sites for the accumulation of organic carbon as peat deposits. With this research,...

Water Temperature and Bathymetric Depth Soundings for Lakes near Barrow

National Center for Atmospheric Research - Earth Observing Laboratory (NCAR EOL) - Onset Water Temperature Pro v2 loggers were used in each of the five lakes. Loggers were attached to a cable which had an anchor (sandbag) and float. One logger was always near the float and one near the sandbag to obtain the upper and lower measurements in the water column. Replicate measurements were obtained, with one thermistor string on the north side of the lake, and one on the south...

Two mechanisms of aquatic and terrestrial habitat change along an Alaskan Arctic coastline

US Geological Survey (USGS) - This study of two interacting physical mechanisms, coastal erosion and storm surge flooding, provides an important example of the complexities and data needs for predicting habitat change and biological responses along Arctic land–ocean interfaces. To better understand how these processes are affecting habitat, we analyzed long-term observational records coupled with recent short-term...

Landsat Derived Historical Lake Extents for the Barrow Peninsula

National Center for Atmospheric Research - Earth Observing Laboratory (NCAR EOL) - This data set consists of Lake extent maps for the Barrow peninsula from five historical Landsat satellite images classified by a hierarchical classification system. Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) was calculated from the green and near infra-red bands and each lake was classified by an independently derived NDWI threshold value. The acquisition dates for the images were 13 July, 1977;...
