King Eider Studies for the Greater Mooses Tooth Project NPR-A, 2020
In this report, we present the first year of results of the King and Spectacled Eider pre-nesting survey in the GMT and Willow study areas and the King Eider nesting study. The goal of the study is to evaluate the effects of development on the abundance, distribution, habitat use, and nesting success of King Eiders in the GMT and Willow development areas.
The 4 primary objectives of the 5-year study are:
• describe annual patterns in distribution and abundance of pre-nesting eiders near and far from infrastructure
• determine the effects of construction period, distance to infrastructure, and habitat on incubation behavior and nest survival
• identify the primary causes of nest failure for eiders
• evaluate changes in the frequency of occurrence of nest predators among construction periods
