In 1979, William Brown prepared a cultural plan for the Iñupiaq community of Nuiqsut, Alaska, entitled Nuiqsut Paisaŋich (translated as Nuiqsut Heritage). The purpose of this update is to reaffirm the community of Nuiqsut’s cultural ties to their land and to document both continuity and change since the Paisaŋich was published in 1979. This update does not seek to redefine the community’s cultural landscape but rather to refine and supplement the landscape with new information. The information presented here is meant to build upon Brown’s original findings, supplemented with new research collected since 1979 and community input. Sections include description of geographic setting, history and overview, cultural traditions and land use, travel, ancestral places, natural features and forces of change.
