Continued Development of the Alaska Marine Information System (AMIS)
The Alaska Marine Information System provides project information with data access and display via the internet. A web-based interface allows scientists, managers, and others to enter information describing past, present, and planned research projects. All project information and data are archived and accessible via keyword searches including Principal Investigator, funding agency, study region, data parameters and other relevant search criteria. In addition to providing access to project information, AMIS is a tool for acquiring datasets, archiving them locally and nationally, and providing data to users through a convenient search.
The AMIS project browser will continue to be developed to enhance functionality and expand the project database. Coding will focus on improving the ability of users to conduct complex searches for projects and associated metadata by PI, contact information, project location (lat/long), funding source, project duration, variable lists, keywords, and other parameters. Functionality will be tested by investigators of NPRB’s BSIERP program during the summer of 2009 and beyond and by personnel at MMS who have expressed interest in AMIS. Other testers and feedback will be sought where possible. As functionality improves and the project database grows, the next focus us on providing direct access to key data sets and download capability via a suite of formats and graphical displays of data temporal history and data density.
