USGS Technical Assistance to Support Region 7 Initiative to Design and Implement a Program of Long-term Ecological Inventory and Monitoring for National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska

The goal of this project is to strengthen the science and effectiveness of the inventory and monitoring activities conducted by Alaska refuges. This will be accomplished by incorporating USGS expertise in science relating to ecological status and trends. Collectively, products from this project will aid in the development of I&M Plans of individual refuges and help define the Regional I&M Program.

To achieve this goal, we have established the following objectives for USGS technical assistance: 1. Support development of refuge-specific conceptual ecosystem models by refuge biologists. 2. Support development of a regional I&M monitoring program by leading a forum on ecoregional-scale monitoring in March or April 2009. 3. Develop a scientific protocol that addresses the highest-priority inventory or monitoring question at the ecoregional-scale for Alaska refuges.
